The perfect off road shoe ideal for fell running, orienteering and cross country. The outsole is the Walsh pyramid type, which has a reputation worldwide for its unbeatable grip and a 14mm EVA midsole for extra cushioning. The upper is constructed in lightweight tear resistant nylon for strength, with velon around the toe, heel and instep for additional support and protection. An ideal all round training or racing shoe.
Weight 245g (!)
Sizes 5 – 12 including half sizes. These sizes are small, so go for a half or full size bigger than you normally are. (I wear a Inov-8 5 and a Walsh 6)
Sue’s review
Walsh’s are the Ronseal of fell running. They do exactly what it says on the tin. There are no gimmicks, no fancy bits, and no marketing. It is a shoe for fell running comprising of a really good sole, strapped to your foot with a bit of nylon and a few laces. It has been more or less the same for the last 30 years, and despite Walsh developing new ones (PB Extreme, PB racer etc) this remains the all time one and only classic, still in it’s 1970’s blue and yellow glory. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it, as they in Bolton (where incidentally it is still made).
Don’t be put off about what i’ve just said – to not change a product in 30 years and still have people buy it is really something. It means it was right first time, and you will have to try it to see.
Whether you will get along with the Walsh depends on whether it fits your foot, which is the same for any shoe you buy. When you put a Walsh on you feel like you are wearing a shoe. Although lightweight, it is supportive and the heel is held in place by quite a deep cup to prevent it lifting out. The midsole also has a degree of stiffness which protects your foot from rocks underneath. The sole is super-grippy on just about anything, you can get it nice and tight around your foot, and flat laces create enough friction for them not to come undone easily, especially when caked in mud.
