I’d been wondering for ages what BTS stood for – and I see now on the packet it stands for better than silk. Tactel is the finest man-made fibre available, and it is stronger and lighter than silk. This sock really is super fine and super soft, and can be worn under Brasher 3 or 4 Season socks, or any equivalent.
So do you need a liner sock? There is a bit of debate about this, and it all comes down to personal choice. In the old days of heavy leather boots, people used to have to wear two pairs of thick socks to protect themselves from the boot (the boots never wore in, it was the feet that wore in first). Boot technology these days means that two pairs is no longer necessary in most cases, however some people do use a liner sock, in addition to their walking sock, to take up space in a boot which is too big. This can happen to those with a narrow or low volume foot where the length of the boot is correct, but there’s just too much room around the foot. Others use liner socks to prevent blisters, as the friction occurs between the two socks, rather than your foot and the sock, similar to the principal of the 1000 mile sock. And of course, an extra layer will add more warmth too.
